NEWPORT, RI. USA-(19-7-2004) For one IMS, one 12-Meter and two PHRF classes, score lines expanded by one race today at the New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex. Four remaining PHRF classes, sailing on a separate race circle, weren’t so lucky—officials abandoned racing due to no wind.
`We decided to wait it out,` said Race Committee Chair John Mendez, who acted as the Principal Race Officer on the `Blue Circle` that held the race. He explained that an hour’s postponement ashore for all classes developed into almost three more hours of waiting on the long glassy swells of Rhode Island Sound. `The natives were circling the Committee Boat, but we let them know what was happening, that our research was telling us a southwest breeze was going to reach us.`
The Blue Circle race, which started in 4-5 knots, finished in 8-10 knots and allowed the IMS class a discard race in their score line, since they had reached eight races. Leading that class with six victories and two seconds is Dan Meyers’s (Boston, Mass.) Numbers, with Blue Yankee trailing behind by six points. In PHRF Class 2, the largest fleet in the regatta, the spread between first- and second-place positions became much slimmer after today’s action. Tomorrow promises to be a nail biter when an eighth race (the fleet now has seven) allows this class a discard race as well. Leading is Rick Orchard’s (Duluth, Ga.) Grins over Mark Minkus’(Upper Saddle River, N.J.) Falcon, the largest boat in this class at 56 feet.
`The challenge in sailing Falcon in light air and lots of swells is that you can’t engage in hand-to-hand combat like our more maneuverable competitors,` said Falcon’s tactician Dobbs Davis (Annapolis, Md.). `Today, we did what we call a Vanderbilt start, a long, timed run to the line, and the timing worked out well. The breeze made a consistent shift to the right, and we tacked early to get to it and gained. In the end, however, we missed taking the lead by eight seconds on corrected time.`
Rick Orchard will be watching his closest competitor closely tomorrow. `We’ve been beating them boat-for-boat,` said Orchard, `but if we counted a throw-out race today, they would be ahead. We’ll just have to try for two bullets tomorrow. If it blows 10-15 like it’s forecasted, that will be great.`
The biennial New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex is in its fourth running and has over 180 entrants competing in two segments of racing. The first, for handicap boats concludes tomorrow. The second, for one-design boats begins Friday, July 23. A distance race on Wednesday, July 21, will split the sessions and be scored separately.
